GOOD NEIGHBOR

Advanced Studio | RISD | Fall 2025
Instructor: Kyle Barker

Bars of timber-framed housing linked by mirrored courtyards propose a new way of living together. The first floor of each volume is communal, with shared kitchens and living spaces. The units on the second and third floors can connect to house large families and groups of friends, or can function as individual studio apartments.

Located in the Federal Hill neighborhood of Providence, the empty lot that would typically fit five triple decker homes now achieves a density of 48 bedrooms. Even with this high density, the courtyards create generous, varied outdoor spaces for residents.

The split gable form, completed by second and third floor wintergardens, references the neighborhood typology while providing light and circulation routes. The timber framed-structure is clad with pre-fab straw insulated panels. Respectful and radical, the project is a good neighbor, inside and out.
