Proposed campus extension for Les Grands Atelier, a natural building school in Villefontaine, France.
Voici Les Papillons (‘here be butterflies’) is a dialogue between heavy and light. Rammed-earth walls establish a datum across the site—extensions of the land from which they rise. Modular wood panels fill the spaces in between, adapting to the earth walls. A boardwalk links the campus to surrounding farmland, allowing visitors to wander through without interruption. We harness the inherent properties of our materials—the thermal mass of earth and the insulating qualities of hemp—to develop passive strategies that support the mission of Les Grands Ateliers.
