THREE LITTLE PIGS
Core Studio II | RISD | Spring 2024
Instructor: Gabriel Feld
This series of four projects reimagines the fable of the Three Little Pigs. In the story, the Big Bad Wolf easily destroys the houses built from straw and sticks, but is thwarted by the third pig’s impenetrable brick house. The story suggests that solid, heavy brick reigns supreme. But what if it was the construction methods of the first two pigs - and not their material choices - that doomed their homes?
In this retelling, the Three Little Pigs’ houses become a fiber canopy, a wooden tower, and an earthen path. The series demonstrates how strength can be forged even with the softest of materials, and explores how the unique properties of each material call for different methods of construction. Each iteration builds on the one before it, culminating in a synthesis of fiber, wood, and earth.
